What Happens If Instagram Removes End-to-End Encryption?

Meta has revealed that Instagram DMs won't be getting end-to-end encryption, a decision slated to take effect on May 8, 2026.

The reason? A lack of widespread adoption of this privacy safeguard. End-to-end encryption ensures that only the individuals exchanging messages can see their content, effectively blocking Meta's access. Considering Instagram's user base exceeds 3 billion, the absence of this feature could push privacy-minded users toward alternatives like Messenger or WhatsApp, both of which still offer encryption.

While some have voiced worries about the potential for unencrypted chats to be exploited by online predators, the removal of encryption also introduces new risks, potentially opening the door for hackers to compromise sensitive conversations.

Furthermore, some believe Meta's move might involve using user chats to train its AI, given the company's past focus on tech over user privacy. This change signals a major shift in how Instagram users could experience and view their chat privacy in the future.
